Ex-factory boss awaits sentence
A former chief executive of a north Derbyshire poultry factory is due to be sentenced after he was found guilty of being involved in hiring illegal workers.
Amjad Iqbal (41), formerly of Chesterfield Poultry Ltd, on Bridge Street, Clay Cross, was found guilty by a jury at Derby Crown Court, last Thursday, of assisting unlawful immigration.
Andy Radcliffe, a UK Border Agency chief immigration officer, said: "This result is testament to the work and determination of our Foreign National Crime Team, including police and agency officers, to create a hostile environment for organised gangs intent on serious immigration offences."
Police and border officers raided Chesterfield Poultry, in July, last year, as part of a clampdown on immigrants suspected of working illegally.
Derbyshire Constabulary and the UK Borders Agency joined forces during the raid and swooped on the site in around 20 vehicles and searched the building before making arrests and examining workers' identification documents.
They revealed how foreign nationals were found with no right to work in the UK and were detained with plans to remove them from the country.
Patrick McCrudden (43), of Marland Way, Manchester, and Katherine Anderson (53), of Lime Close, Salford, admitted assisting unlawful immigration.
Iqbal, of Parkfield, Chorleywood, Hertfordshire, who was remanded in custody, McCrudden and Anderson are all due to be sentenced today, Thursday, February 4.
The UK Border Agency confirmed Mr Iqbal as a former chief executive and revealed how all three defendants had been involved in labour trafficking.
Mr Radcliffe added: "These were serious offences committed by criminals who paid no regard to the UK's immigration rules and who were intent on exploiting others for financial gain."
