Falling tool just misses man and baby
An Ikea shopper is furious after a workman’s tool fell from the roof missing him and his 18-month old son by inches.
Dean Lowthorpe was walking from Ikea to British Home Stores on the Giltbrook Retail Park when a pair of wire cutters dropped from the roof just missing him and his son.
“I dread to think what would of happened if they had hit one of us,” he said.
“We were lucky because it would have caused serious injury from that height.”
Mr Lowthorpe said the workmen did not say sorry and just continued about their business, making him even more angry.
The Ripley resident has since complained to the Giltbrook store manager and the chief executive of Ikea, and has had an apology, but is dissatisfied with his responses.
He has written back to the chief executive asking why the area was not fenced off, and says he has not had a reply for three weeks.
“I’m angry. I want to know why this was allowed to happen in the first place and what actions have been put in place to avoid this happening again.
“Safety precautions should be in place,” he said.
A spokesperson at Ikea said: “The health and safety of all our customers and co-workers is always a top priority.
“As soon as we were made aware of the incident involving Mr Lowthorpe and his son and had confirmed that there were no injuries.
“We immediately carried out a full investigation in line with the company’s strict health and safety standards.
“Whilst the investigation highlighted that this was an isolated incident, we decided to implement an additional measure aimed at providing the safest possible environment for our customers and
co-workers.
“Ikea has been in direct contact with Mr Lowthorpe to apologise for the shock and the Nottingham store will contact him again in an attempt to restore his faith in Ikea”.
