Fantastic end to festival

Pupils took the centre stage for the spectacular finale of this year’s DH Lawrence Festival.

The final curtain came down on the ninth annual festival in the writer’s hometown on Wednesday night with Eastwood Comprehensive School’s performing arts students acting out some of his most famous work, including scenes from Sons and Lovers.

Dancers, musicians and film director Prof Christopher Miles – festival patron – all paid tribute to the town’s most famous son at the event. Prof Miles led a question and answer session during the event.

More than 3,500 people flocked to Eastwood from around the world to enjoy the fortnight-long programme of more than 60 events and activities.

Ashley Marriott , head of leisure and culture at Broxtowe Borough Council, which supported the event, said: “Local people are rightly proud of the borough’s rich heritage and this year’s hugely successful DH Lawrence Festival provided yet another fantastic opportunity to celebrate the life and work of the writer in and around his hometown of Eastwood.”

He added that the festival was ‘a credit to the dedication and hard work’ of everyone who helped to make the event a success.

The heritage centre was recently voted Nottinghamshire’s best visitor attraction.
