Final push against charge for parking

Placard waving councillors are to stage a last-ditch protest in a bid to halt plans to introduce car parking charges in Kimberley.

The plans are due to go before Broxtowe Borough Council's cabinet at its meeting on July 28 and town councillors are calling on residents to join their campaign during the meeting at Beeston's town hall.

Town councillor, Mel Crow, said: "We see this as the last thing that we can do – it's a last-ditch attempt at getting Kimberley exempt from the plans.

"There is no business case for Kimberley because the town is so small.

"The revenue they would get would not even cover the capital and staff costs."

Plans to introduce charges at all council-owned car parks in the borough were included in the borough council's budget, which was passed in March.

The proposal was so controversial that a working group was immediately set up to see if money could be saved elsewhere.

But following a majority vote, the group decided to recommend the charges go ahead to the council's cabinet.

Kimberley Town Council was worried the proposals would drive out businesses and launched a campaign to fight the charges.

It eventually submitted a petition with 3,000 signatures to the borough council.

Cllr Richard Robinson, who represents the town on the borough council, also wants to launch another action group called Kimberley Against Car parking Charges (KAPC).

But was told by town councillors at the meeting last Thursday that he was wasting his time and the council had already done everything possible to get its view across.

Cllr Robinson said at the meeting: "It will not supersede anything the town council has done, I just think to get things done you have to go the extra mile.

"There is extra work we need to do and I am convinced that with visible presence we can get this stupid decision stopped."

The cabinet meeting on July 28 starts at 6pm.
