First week of fun at Lawrence Festival

The DH Lawrence Festival has a host of events on offer over the next week to mark the life and work of the town’s famous writer.

The programme includes open days at historic buildings and churches, guided walks, lectures, film screenings and parties.

Today, Friday September 7, there will be church open days, a film screening of the Rocking Horse winner and a guided bike ride.

Eastwood MP Gloria De Piero will also be at the DH Lawrence Heritage Centre dressed in Victorian clothing as part of an open day.

The weekend will see local churches and historic buildings of interest open their doors for people to have a look around and in the evening on Saturday there will be an outdoor concert at Colliers Wood in Moorgreen and a hog roast and line dance at Beauvale Priory.

Additionally on Sunday, there will be the Brinsley Headstocks Festival and a special party to celebrate Lawrence’s birthday at Durban House in Mansfield Road.

Kicking off the week on Monday, there will be two guided walks and a talk on Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

On Tuesday, there will be reading in the library for kids, guided walks and lectures on DH Lawrence and on Wednesday there will be creative writing workshops, museum tours and a talk on the mining heritage of Eastwood.

On Thursday a guided walk will leave from the Nelson and Railway pub in Kimberley and on Friday there will be a film screening of The Priest of Love.

The DH Lawrence Heritage Centre will be free entry today, September 7.
