Get fit for free at a new gym in the park

NEW fitness equipment for adults and older children has been installed at a Nuthall park.

Six pieces of equipment, including a crosstrainer and mini treadmill, have been installed at the Basil Russell playing fields.

The park already has play areas for pre-school and under-11s and is a regarded as the hub for the local community.

But Nuthall Parish Council received hundreds of requests from people in Nuthall and the surrounding areas for the park to have a wider range of equipment that adults can use.

The council applied to Notts County Council’s Local Improvement Scheme for funding and their application was supported by local councillor Philip Owen.

Mr Owen said: “The feedback from users was loud and clear, so installing the new equipment has turned the park into a truly family one with something for every age.

“In years to come I can see everyone from young families with toddlers to the retired getting fit here and it will be a much-valued facility in the Broxtowe area.”

The £19,500 project, off Maple Drive, has seen a number of cardio and toning pieces of equipment installed.

As well as the fitness equipment, the park in recent years has also had a £6,000 refurbishment of the tennis courts and an upgrade of the toilets block.

Local volunteers maintain the landscape and operate a park watch scheme.

Parish councillor Jill Owen added: “What better way to start off the year than getting fit and exercising more?

“I’m sure this equipment will be well used and encourage more people to visit Basil Russell playing fields.”

Nuthall resident Grenville Green, 69, of Cedarland Crescent, said he will aim to use the equipment every day.

He said: “I think it will do a lot of good for Nuthall. I need to walk more and exercise more, and walking up to the park and going on the equipment every day will be very helpful for me.”
