Girls gets top award for their fundraising

Two school girls in Eastwood have been awarded for their fundraising efforts to get a new skatepark in the town.

Beth Lee and Rhianne Lounds have picked up a Local Improvement Scheme award following a two year campaign to get a £165,000 skating facility in Coronation Park.

Work for the skatepark – set to be one of the best in the East Midlands – gets underway next month and Eastwood councillor Keith Longdon said it was ‘vital’ to reduce anti-social behaviour.

The councillor, who presented the award, said: “I think facilities like these are vitally important.

“Anti-social behaviour has reduced by 52 per cent in Eastwood since the youth club in Derby Road opened. Figures will only improve further once this skatepark has opened. It means people have somewhere to go.”

The girls, who go to Eastwood Comprehensive School, have so far raised £115,00.

The money has come from county, borough and town councils as well as events the girls have organised such as concerts, talents shows and customer bag packs.

The campaign got underway because the current skatepark had fallen into disrepair and become dangerous.

Community development manager at Eastwood Comprehensive School Sarah Taylor said the girls had shown great maturity as well as sound business acumen in getting the funding in place.

She said: “Beth and Rhianne have been inspirational and truly deserve this award.

“They have been driven from day one and the new look skatepark will be testament to what can be achieved with a lot of hard work and effort.”

Cllr Longden presented Beth and Sarah with their award in front of more than 250 guests at the Cedric Ford Pavilion on the Newark Showground.

Unfortunately Rhianne was unable to attend the awards ceremony as she was sitting one of her GCSE’s.
