'Homecoming' for Kimberley's charitable swing singer
A RECORD-BREAKING swing singer from Kimberley is preparing for a series of 'mini-homecoming' gigs when he will perform in three different pubs across the area.
Ian Campbell who sings swing classics as Frankie Martin, is not even a third of the way through his UK tour of 366 gigs in 366 days and has already raised 23,500.
On Thursday July 29, he will play at Kimberley Cricket Club.
Then, after returning from a gig in Sharlow on July 30, he will take to the stage on Saturday July 31 at the Library Bar, Scargill Walk, Eastwood.
To finish off the local leg of his tour he will perform at The Nuthall - formerly the Broxtowe Inn on Sunday August 1.
He said: "When I perform at Kimberley Cricket Club it will be the first time I've been home in eight weeks.
"It's my daughter's 21st birthday so I arranged some gigs close to home."
By the time Ian returns he will have completed all of the Scottish dates of his amazing fundraising tour.
He said: "There's already been so many highlights.
"One that stands out is when a mad Scotsman bought me a pint at 9.30am and we sat drinking it by Loch Ness.
"There'll be so many memories when I'm finished, I'm keeping a diary so I remember them all and I hope to try and get them published after it's all over."
Ian started the tour on his birthday, April 19, and is performing all over England, Scotland and Wales and staying in a camper van after his shows.
For most of the gigs there is no ticket price, he just asks people to turn up and make a donation on the door if they want to.
He said: "I've already beaten my target of 20,000 and I'm only a quarter of the way through the dates so far.
"It's a wonderful experience and even though the novelty's worn off a bit I'm still so amazed by how generous people really are.
"I'm really looking forward to the people back home being able to show their support and of course keeping the record attempt on track."
All of the money raised is going to Help for Heroes.
Ian, who has served on Kimberley Town Council for three years, chose the charity because of personal links with the military.
The tour kicked off at Nocton in Lincolnshire, where Ian was born, and he will complete his one year and a day run in Kimberley next April.
