Horse riders call for a crossing on busy road

Horse riders and walkers have called for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on a busy stretch of road where a horse was hit by a car.

A bridleway which crosses the Awsworth bypass at the junction with Newtons Lane, Cossall, and continues through fields, is used frequently by walkers and horse riders, who have said a crossing there would prevent accidents.

The petition, which has the support of Broxtowe MP Nick Palmer and Kimberley and Cossall councillor Richard Robinson, has been drawn up by Julie Webster and her sister-in-law, Shelley Webster, who owns two horses which have to be taken over the bypass from their stables to a field where they graze every day.

Julie and Shelley are hoping to get 1,000 signatures before it is presented to Nottinghamshire County Council.

Shelley said: "My horse was hit about three years ago and, amazingly, he wasn't hurt that badly but it could have been a lot worse and it's also dangerous for drivers.

Julie said: "The traffic has got terrible down that road – it can take about 20 minutes to cross.

"Although there's a crossing a bit further down, anyone who wants to follow the bridleway through the field has got to walk down the bypass to get to it, which is just not good enough."

Cllr Richard Robinson got involved with the campaign after Julie and Shelley contacted him last summer, following his involvement with a similar campaign aimed at getting a crossing installed in Kimberley.

He said: "People find it almost impossible to cross there and there's quite clearly a lot of support from the people of Newtons Lane and the Glebe in Cossall and from Awsworth."

MP Nick Palmer added: "I talked to a lot of people in the immediate vicinity and they told me there is a real risk that something dangerous could happen there."

A spokesman from Nottinghamshire County Council said: "This issue has not been raised with the county council.

"However, we will consider the petition when we receive it and investigate the crossing area to assess whether any improvements are needed."
