Horse town centre ban proposal
Horses may be banned from the centre of a north Derbyshire town after concerns were raised about the safety of pedestrians.
The suggestion of creating a horse exclusion zone in Dronfield town centre was made by Cllr Jeff Sorrill at a meeting of the town council on Monday evening.
It followed concerns raised by Cllr Mike Wing about horse riders illegally using public pavements and parks.
He said: "It's very dangerous. Damage is being caused and people are being put at risk by people riding their horses along the pavement."
Cllr Wing said he witnessed three horses canter closely past a young woman pushing a pram, and said lots of young people were riding their animals up and down Sindelfingen Park — leaving hoof marks on the pavement.
Town clerk Roy Hunt said the council wrote to the local stables every year telling riders not to use the pavements.
The council now plans to send another letter, which it hopes to do jointly with the police, reminding all the surrounding stables of their responsibilities.
