A huge fire at the former Stanton Ironworks could burn for days, according to the fire service.

More than 7,000 tonnes of wood are still burning this morning (Monday) at a recycling facility off Low’s Lane, sending plumes of smoke billowing across the M1 motorway.

The fire started late on Saturday night and crews from eight fire stations, including, Ilkeston, Stapleford and Long Eaton have been battling to keep it under control.

Low’s Lane is still closed to traffic and will remain so for some time – possibly several days – while firefighters put out the blaze.

Residents in the area were advised on Sunday to keep their windows and doors shut and stay indoors and motorists travelling between junctions 25 and 26 were asked to drive with caution.

More updates to follow.
