Ilkeston’s Dave honoured

Cycling coach Dave Brailsford’s hometown is set to bestow upon him a huge honour after Team GB’s performance at the Olympics.
With nine medals, including seven golds under his team’s belt so far, the leader of Erewash Borough Council has offered Ilkeston-based Dave the Freedom of the Borough.
In recent years the honour has only been handed out once, to The Mercian Regiment, in 2010.
Cllr Chris Corbett said he wanted to let Dave know how proud the borough is of his team’s achievment at the London games as performance director of the team, as well as the success of Team Sky in the Tour de France, for which he was general manager and oversaw Bradley Wiggins’ victory.
“The community has been thrilled by the outstanding achievements of him and his team,” said Cllr Corbett.
“I wanted to recognise that by offering him the Freedom of the Borough.”
Councillors are set to vote on whether to give Dave the honour at the next full council meeting in October.
But all of them are expected to vote in favour of the plan, Cllr Corbett said.
“I would expect all councillors will support this honour as it’s a well-deserved honour for a man at the top of his game,” he added.
Although the honour is a ceremonial title which doesn’t afford Dave any special priveleges, Cllr Corbett said it was a great and rare honour to have and one which dates back to the Middle Ages.
If councillors vote to give Dave the Freedom of the Borough – and he accepts – he will be presented with a medal and a scroll certificate in a casket.
After his team’s performance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Dave was awarded the CBE and given the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Coach Award.
Derby-born Dave, 48, lives in Ilkeston.
So far, the medals tally for the British cycling team alone would put them in the top 10 for the total numbers of medals achieved by entire countries.
