Kennels packed out with unwanted pets

A DOG kennels in Awsworth is appealing for more people to offer homes to the pets being abandoned due to the credit crunch as it has hardly any space left.

Babbington Dog Rescue is struggling for money and space as more and more people dump their pets in the months after Christmas.

Manager Tony Sanderson said: "We have got record numbers coming in and going out – the most since we opened seven years ago. We're full to bursting."

"We are using every corner of the kennels and are doubling up in some cases because some kennels are bigger than others.

"Mr Sanderson, who re-homed 68 dogs last month, is even given dogs with untreated illnesses because owners are not able to afford vet bills. He said there had been an increase in the number of cruelty cases he had seen.

Earlier this month a Doberman was handed in with a serious infection caused by a hard rubber ball in its stomach and the kennels had to pay t 800 in vet bills.

A starved six-month-old-dog was brought in last week with skin hanging from its bones.

The centre survives off re-homing fees, money taken from the boarding kennels and council fees.

"We need anyone thinking of having a dog to come and see us first. All the dogs here deserve a loving home", Mr Sanderson said.

All dogs are fully vaccinated and microchipped. Call the kennels, on Westby Lane, on 0115 9324576 or email babbington21@btopenworld.com.
