Kids' fitness cash moved
Money set aside to build a fitness centre for children in Kimberley will now be used to extend an adult fitness suite in Bramcote.
Broxtowe Borough Council planned to spend 50,000 on building a new facility for children at Kimberley Leisure Centre.
But due to low demand at the borough's other children's section at Bramcote Leisure Centre, councillors have decided to transfer the children's gym equipment from there over to Kimberley, and spend the 50,000 on expanding the existing adult fitness centre at Bramcote.
Vice-chairman of Kimberley Town Council, Roy Plumb, has two grandchildren that use Kimberley Leisure Centre and said they would benefit from the new children's facility.
"It's a welcome asset to Kimberley and I'm really pleased for my grandchildren. I am sorry that Bramcote are losing it but I'm delighted Kimberley is gaining it," he said.
Ted Czerniak, director of housing, leisure and culture at the council, said: "Part and parcel of the decision making was the huge success we were having with the adult gym at Bramcote.
"The pressure on the main gym there was far greater than the need for kids' facilities, and after doing our research we realised we would get more youth attendance at Kimberley than Bramcote.
"In these difficult economic times, we are having very good attendance at our leisure centres because they are such good value for money.
"People are leaving private facilities and coming to ours. We want to meet supply and demand, and that's what this is about.
"It's using the money economically among the leisure facilities that we have got, and we want to make the north and south of the borough equally well served."
The children's gym equipment, which will be installed at Kimberley Leisure Centre over the next couple of months, will cater for eight to 16-year-olds.
Latest figures show money made from health and fitness facilities at the four Broxtowe leisure centres in March was 79,744 compared to 46,455 in March last year.
And despite the recession, there has been a year-on-year increase in leisure centre attendance since 2006 in Kimberley, Bramcote, Chilwell and Eastwood.
