‘Kimberley deserves a lot better than this’

Terraced houses planned for Kimberley brewery site have been branded ‘substandard’ and ‘not in keeping with the area’ by a local campaigner.

Darren Warner said the design of the properties was ‘rock bottom’ and Kimberley deserved better than the ‘drab, poor lack of effort’ proposed.

Mr Warner, the chairman of the Save Our Brewery Site campaign group, said: “I come from a construction background and I feel we are being offered something substandard.

“It really is rock bottom as far has design is concerned. There are no redeeming features in sympathy with the location.

“This design is duplicated nationally, usually on huge inner city housing sites requiring little consideration to design, just practicality.

“Hardy Street deserves better and Kimberley deserves better than this drab, poor lack of effort,” he added.

Mr Warner said he did not want to oppose the application, but would write to Broxtowe Borough Council saying there had been a ‘lack of imagination and consideration’.

However Alistair Russell, a spokesman for the developers Metis, said the aim was to improve the character of the area.

“The design was developed by experienced, locally-based architects through extensive consultation with local authority planning officers,” he said.

“Our objective has always been to improve the character of the area and create the best value product for future homeowners, including first time buyers.”

The first planning application to build on the brewery site, ‘The Field Plan’ was submitted earlier this month and includes the plans for the terraced properties in Hardy Street.
