Kimberley brewery pledge by potential developer

THE DEVELOPER in discussions over the future of the former Kimberley brewery site has vowed to involve the community every step of the way.

Broxtowe borough councillor Richard Robinson has revealed that he met with interested developers CDS Co-operative last week.

And speaking to the Advertiser this week, the firm has pledged to listen to local residents about the site.

CDS executive director David Rodgers said: "We want to facilitate the development of a community vision for the site that links to the Government's localising of planning - David Cameron's big society idea.

"Greene King still owns the brewery and they will understandably want to benefit financially from the development so we will be working with the owners, working with the planning authority and working with the local community for a win-win situation for all stakeholders."

Cllr Robinson added: "We're not going to give anyone false hopes - there is a long way to go yet.

"But this is the most positive development there has been so far.

"Some of the immediate obstacles have been overcome and now momentum is growing."

Selling agents Savilles are set to take representatives from CDS on a site visit next month.

But Conservative and Liberal Democrat councillors say they are concerned Labour's Cllr Robinson is 'getting people's hopes up.'

Leader of the council Cllr David Watts said: "It's far too early to raise people's hopes. If Richard is able to discuss with developers, great.

"But he hasn't spoken to the council and he hasn't spoken to the brewery owners."

Tory councillor Mel Crow said: "We are a long way off. It is a site that does need to be developed but there is no point in getting people's hopes up at this early stage."

She even accused Cllr Robinson of trying to 'stir people up' ahead of the upcoming by-election in Kimberley, following of the long term illness of Cllr Tony Rutherford.

The former Hardys and Hansons Brewery in Hardy Street closed after it was bought by Greene King in October 2006, with operations moved to its Suffolk base.
