Kimberley bus fears are eased

TRENT bus officials moved swiftly this week to deny claims of a shake-up in services around Kimberley.

Town Coun Janet Pearce said a driver told her the 555 service would be withdrawn on January 12th.

And he also claimed service 27 would get a new route.

But communications director Melvyn Hopwood said: "The 555 is not going to be withdrawn or altered in the foreseeable future and neither is the 27.

"I can categorically say there is no basis for these rumours. Neither route is subject to review."

The town council regards the 555 route as vital for Kimberley residents because it provides a direct link to the Queens Medical Centre and Beeston.

Coun Pearce, who is also a Broxtowe councillor, said she arrived five minutes early to catch the 555 to get to her meeting at Beeston.

When it had still not arrived ten minutes late, she decided to make the journey by catching another bus and changing at Canning Circus.

She told the town council: "The bus stopped at Cinderhill and the driver told me to get off and change to the 555.

"I told him I wanted to catch the bus into town and catch another one out.

"The driver insisted I get off and didnt have the entitlement to catch the bus in. He said there would be a surcharge."

She told how the driver made a mobile phone call and agreed to take her into Nottingham - saying his job would be on the line if an inspector got on.

Coun Pearce added: "We had a discussion on the way into the town on the subject of the 555 and other buses.

"The driver told me I dont know what you are worried about. The 555 is being withdrawn completely on January 12th next year.

"Also the local Eastwood service is being withdrawn, the 27 route would be changed on January 12th with a number of other bus services withdrawn."

Coun Pearce later phoned Trent and was told "categorically that the driver was wrong" and they had no information about any changes.
