Kindhearted Staffy owner donates prize

The winner of a national cutest pet competition has donated her winning prize to the dog rescue centre where she adopted her winning pooch.

Dog lover Helen Hallam, from Heanor, entered Staffordshire bull terrier Martha into the competition, run by supermarket chain Morrison’s, in a bid to raise the profile of the breed.

Martha, topped the online vote in the dog category, winning Helen a £250 voucher for dog food.

Having adopted Martha from Babbington Rescue Centre in January this year, she decided it was fitting to donate the food from Pets at Home in Giltbrook to the Awsworth-based kennels.

Helen, who used to volunteer at the centre as a dog walker, said: “I just wanted to promote Babbington – they do such a fantastic job there.

“And I wanted to get some good publicity for Staffies.

“They get such a bad press – they’re always in the papers for being dangerous but I wanted to show a positive side of them.”

Tony Sanderson who runs the centre in Westby Lane, said “It’s brilliant that Helen has donated the food won in a national competition to us.

“And it’s fantastic that a rescued Staffy dog has won –it’s one up for the Staffies.

“They do get a bad press and winning a competition like this really does help to raise their profile.”
