Langley Mill man caged for racism

A MAN has been locked up for making racist remarks to the Turkish owner of a takeaway cafe in Langley Mill.

A court heard 20-year-old Karl Beeson made an abusive comment and appeared to think the man was from Pakistan.

Then he added: "Go back to your country, we don't want you here," said Richard Kenward, prosecuting at Derby Crown Court on Thursday.

"The victim felt the remark was racist," he told the court.

Later, the man's uncle entered the Station Road shop to see Beeson bang on the counter and shout: "White man power is better than black man power."

Beeson, of Milnhay Road, Langley Mill, had been convicted by Southern Derbyshire Magistrates of racially aggravated harassment on May 25.

However, the bench had sent him to the crown court to be sentenced.

Recorder Stuart Farquhar sent Beeson to a young offenders' institution for nine months and said he had been given "a last chance" when he appeared in court on April 26 on another matter.

At the time, he received a community order and was ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work.

When he last appeared in court, Beeson was "on the threshold of a custodial sentence" and committed the racism offense within a month.

The recorder told him: "This was racially aggravated harassment. I suspect you were clearly in drink and spoiling for a fight."

Lesley Goodman, mitigating, said Beeson had just got a full-time job working for his uncle.

"In the last few weeks, Mr Beeson has started to make positive progress in his life," said Miss Goodman.

She urged the recorder to suspend custody to act as a warning to Beeson.
