Last mill is pulled down

Almost a year since production of heat-treated flour was halted at Langley Mill’s last working mill, demolition has begun.

Planning permission was granted to knock down Smiths Flour Mill on Cromford Road on Friday - although contractors had already begun some work at the 19th Century building.

Last May Whitworth’s, owners of the site, which bought Smith’s when it went into administration at the start of 2012, closed the production arm of the business, making 20 staff redundant. It remained open as a storage facility
until the end of the year.

Whitworth’s were contacted by the News - but are yet to say whether there are any future plans for the site.

Amber Valley Borough councillor for Langley Mill and chairman of the village’s historical society Cllr Brian Gration said the demolition marked the loss of Langley Mill’s last mill and was a blow to the area. “There is evidence of a mill being on that site since the Doomsday Book,” he said. “It is a shame, but there is nothing we can do about it.”

The tall blue building had been a major landmark for years.
