Legends shown at Chatsworth

Displays celebrating the legendary 17th century Duchess Georgiana feature along a new visitor route at Chatsworth House which reopened this week after an extensive revamp.

The Derbyshire stately home is said to have undergone its most significant facelift since the sixth Duke's alterations in the 1830s, including restored stonework under the continuing 14m masterplan to clean the outside of the 300-year-old building, and new lift access.

The Duke of Devonshire said: "This is a very exciting year for us as we start to reap the rewards of this extensive repair and renovation project to ensure Chatsworth is enjoyed by many future generations.

"The improvements to the visitor route make it easier to view the fantastic interiors. We're also delighted that the new spaces created enable us to show many wonderful pieces that haven't been on view to visitors before."

A new exhibition honouring the 90th birthday of the present Dowager Duchess and last surviving Mitford sister Deborah Devonshire features personal material and images offering an insight into her life and work including her childhood in Oxfordshire and marriage, her friendships with the likes of Lucian Freud, Evelyn Waugh and Jack Kennedy, years of public service and success as a best-selling author.

Other highlights include a collection of family portraits spanning 450 years which features a new video portrait of the Duke's daughter-in-law Laura Burlington.
