Men take on 960 mile bike challenge
Two men are cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats to raise money for a cancer research centre.
Andy Moon and Jerry Bateman are biking 960 miles to raise money for the John Van Geest Centre at Nottingham Trent University.
Andy wanted to support a cancer charity because his dad suffers the disease, and Jerry, the management accountant at Nottingham Trent University suggested the research centre.
“I was going to do it on my own so it’s all worked out quite well ,” said Andy, who lives in Underwood.
The keen cyclist, 54, plans to bike 5,000 miles around Britain some time in the future.
Jerry, who lives in Westwood, said biking from Lands End to John O Groats was ‘one of those things you want to do’ as a cyclist.
Also a keen runner, he said: “It’s one of those must-do things if you’re a cyslist that you have to do before you’re knocking at the pearly gates.”
Jerry bikes 32 miles to work and back three times a week and has done a 80 mile bike ride and 70 mile bike ride in preparation for the challenge on September 9.
He said: “It’s very much a personal challenge with the opportunity to raise money for a very good cause.”
The two friends have so far raised about £300 between them, and say they do not have a target in mind, they just want to raise ‘as much as possible’.
The Dixies Arms pub in Bagthorpe where they drink has sponsored them £100 and several friends have made very generous donations.
Jerry, chairman of Ripley Running Club, arranged a relay race at the trent back in May which raised £8,000 for the same cause.
He has has ran 80 marathons over the years and won the Robin Hood Marathon in 2004.
