Middle East link to town
A group of teachers and a council leader from a north Derbyshire town are getting set to visit war-torn Palestine to build links between their schools and communities.
Staff from Dronfield schools — St Andrews Primary, Dronfield Infant and Junior, Holmesdale Infant, Northfield Junior and Dronfield Henry Fanshawe — and Meadows Community in Chesterfield will be joined by Dronfield Town Council leader Simon Temple on the trip to the West Bank next month.
It follows a visit to the town by Palestinian educationalists as part of a British Council initiative in October.
Rhian Marshall, year five teacher at St Andrews, has been the driving force behind the return trip, which will include meeting the West Bank's education minister and visiting partner schools.
She said: "It's a very exciting opportunity. I'm fascinated by the whole situation and the children are always keen to learn about any new community."
Cllr Temple, who is funding his own place, said he wanted to connect Dronfield with a Palestinian town or village, make links between his church, Dronfield Baptist, and West Bank Christians, as well as Scout groups in the two places.
He added: "These people have come over to Dronfield to learn from our educational experience and I feel there are things we can learn from them."
