More support for people at risk of suicide

Health bosses in Derbyshire are pledging more support to those most at risk of suicide and their loved ones following the launch of a new national suicide prevention strategy.

Research conducted by NHS Derby City and NHS Derbyshire County shows that middle-aged men are now the group at highest risk of dying by suicide in Derby and Derbyshire. The reasons for this are complex, but may be compounded by the current economic climate.

This mirrors national trends which show that the number of deaths from suicide is declining in men under the age of 35 over the last decade and increasing in men over 50.

A review of the number of deaths from suicide in Derby and Derbyshire in 2011 reveals that 66 people died from suicide, including 20 people from Derby City.

Half of all deaths from suicide in Derbyshire occurred in adults aged over 50 years, with a higher percentage of deaths from suicide taking place in the County in adults over 70 years, at 16 per cent compared to 5 per cent in Derby City.
