Erewash Labour Group have called on Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry to force a re-think on the closure of the Manners Ward Ilkeston Community Hospital.

Ms Soubry was appointed junior Health Minister in David Cameron’s cabinet reshuffle last week.

Chair of Erewash Labour Local Government Committee, Helen Clark, said: “Ilkeston Community Hospital is embedded in the heart of Ilkeston and the decision to close half of its beds is a one way path to eventual wholesale closure.

“This isn’t about modern methods of care, it’s about NHS cuts.

“Sick and elderly people will now be returned to the community and families who have neither the resources nor the skills to give them the care that they need.”

Local councillors also called for Ms Soubry to visit the hospital and see for herself what a valuable resource it is.

Ms Soubry has been made aware of the calls and the invitation.
