Mum found in copycat hanging

A GRIEF-stricken Chesterfield mum was found hanging from a tree the year after her eldest son died in similar circumstances.

Mother-of-eight Anne Hamilton was found dead in woods near the Chesterfield Canal, off Newbridge Lane, in Brimington, by a dog walker in November last year.

An inquest into her death heard that her son Robbie (26) had also been found hanging in that area in August 2008.

Ex-boyfriend Keith Bott said she had felt guilty about Robbie's death and threatened suicide, threatening to jump out of a bedroom window last November 12.

"She was stricken with grief over her son," he said.

Daughter Melissa Hamilton said her mum's relationship with new boyfriend David Chapman had not found favour with the family.

Mrs Hamilton (48), of The Crescent, Brimington, became angry on the afternoon of November 12 after overhearing Melissa tell Mr Bott that she had changed since she met Mr Chapman.

She stormed outside and her daughter assumed she had gone to visit Mr Chapman but relatives could not find her and alerted police. Her body was discovered the following morning.

"She had talked about being with Robbie and doing what Robbie did," said Melissa.

Mr Chapman told the inquest he had been dating Mrs Hamilton for five months and she sent him a text message on the eve of her death, saying she loved him and would meet him after cooking dinner.

"Later I spoke to her on the phone and she seemed depressed and out of breath.

"She wouldn't tell me what was wrong and refused to come to my home," he said.

"She told me she wanted to end it.

"She asked me to say goodbye and I refused."

Police found 133 missed calls and messages on her mobile phone and the last call she made was to Mr Chapman at 5.50pm on November 12.

Post-mortem tests revealed that Mrs Hamilton had taken less anti-depressants than her prescribed dosage.

Deputy North Derbyshire Coroner Nigel Anderson recorded an open verdict after hearing that she did not leave a suicide note.
