New bank to offer support

A new community bank hopes to provide support for local people by offering food, furniture, clothes and more from a new base.
The Arena Food Bank has been running from a container in the car park of the Rutland Street church but the service can now expand thanks to acquiring a new base.
The Arena Community Bank will run from 1 Belfield Street, Ilkeston, and hopes to become somewheret hat offers everything from food parcels and a laundry service, to employment opportunities and cooked meals.
Lisa Harrison, community co-ordinator, said: “We’ve got so many plans now we have the new building and it will allow us to help so many more people.
“Running the food bank showed us that people needed support in so many other areas.
“We hope that when the new centre is up and running we can offer that support and reach even more people.”
The new base will mean that as well as food parcels the Arena can run a clothing bank, furniture bank,provide cooked meals for up to 100 people and a baby bank.
Lisa added: “One of the things we are really keen to get set up is an after school feeding programme where pupils from local schools can come for a meal.
“To do that we really need a bus to pick up and drop off kids who want to come along.
“If anyone can help us they should get in touch.”
Work is underway at the new centre after Tesco donated paint and decorating materials.
The bank is also urging anyone who can donate racking or storage to the charity to get in touch.
