Nine year sentence for sick paedophile

A PAEDOPHILE who was chairman of a Kimberley sub-aqua club has been jailed for nine years for an horrific catalogue of abuse against three children over nearly three decades.

David Eastwick, of Shelton Lock in Derby, was the chairman of Ilkeston and Kimberley Sub-Aqua Club when the offences against two boys and a girl came to light earlier this year. He immediately resigned.

Derby Crown Court heard none of the abuse was committed in his capacity as 'a prominent member' of the club.

Following Eastwick's sentencing, the acting chairman of the club, Chris Brown-Needham, said they had been extremely shocked.

He said: "David Eastwick resigned before we were aware of any allegations. He wasn't involved in training in the club. All instructors are subject to full CRB checks."

The court was told Eastwick's first victim, a boy, came forward in the 1980s at the age of 15, but after a police investigation no charges were brought.

Eastwick had already begun abusing a girl at this time and then, about 15 years later, he targeted a third child, a boy.

Grace Hale, prosecuting, said Eastwick had sexually assaulted one victim in a swimming pool.

The 65-year-old was charged with offences on all three victims this year.

The court heard that Eastwick committed the offences between 1976 and 2004. At the time his victims were aged between seven and 14-years-old.

Miss Hale said Eastwick's first victim had told police he felt 'his childhood had been damaged by the abuse and he felt dirty and ashamed'.

She said that Eastwick told his second victim that the abuse was their 'secret'.

Miss Hale said: "As a result of being corrupted by the defendant, she's had difficulties in having relationships with men."

The court heard that Eastwick's third victim told his mother about the abuse in January this year and she contacted the police. The other two cases then came to light.

When Eastwick discovered that his abusing was out in the open, he took 20 Paracetamol and was admitted to hospital.

Miss Hale said he told a nurse about the situation he was in and she informed the police, who arrested him.

In court, Eastwick, of Carlton Avenue, admitted ten charges of indecently assaulting a child and eight counts of indecency with a child.

James Cleary, in mitigation, said that Eastwick was now 'a broken man'.

Mr Cleary said: "He fully acknowledges the despicable nature of what he did and fully acknowledges that in prison he needs to co-operate with any sexual offenders' programmes that can be offered."

Eastwick was ordered to sign the sex offenders' register and banned from working with children for life.
