Nuthall Council makes history

editorial image

Nuthall Parish Council is believed to have made history by appointing the country’s first ever councillor with Downs Syndrome into office.

Stephen Green, 47, has filled a vacancy on the council following the sudden resignation of Paul Simpson.

The council invited nominations and as Stephen was the only person in the village to respond, he was duly given the opportunity to become councillor.

Broxtowe Borough Council described the move as ‘groundbreaking’.

Liz Silver from the Nottinghamshire Disabled People’s Movement said: “This is great news. There is a general misconception that people with disabilities are unable to contribute, but this is not true and Stephen is a shining example.”

It is the second time that Stephen has stood for election to Nuthall Parish Council.

The first being eight years ago, when he was unsuccessful.

Stephen will be accompanied at future meetings by his father and carer, Grenville.

The new councillor, who lives in Cedarland Crescent, is a member of Kimberley and Nuthall Churches Mens Breakfast Club where he helps prepare and cook meals, is also a mentor to students with disabilities at a local college, and has done several sponsored swims for charity.

He was recently acclaimed for learning to read and play music, culminating in a piano recital at Kimberley’s Holy Trinity Church.

He said: “I am very proud to be a parish councillor and I promise to do my very best to make significant contributions at its meetings.

“I owe much to my family, especially my father, who has been my rock.”
