Park opening after refit

Knowle Park Recreation Ground in Kimberley is being officially opened today, November 2, after a huge makeover.

The £49,000 improvement project included the installation of new timber climbing equipment, new swings and a new embankment slide.

The play area has also been spruced up with landscaping and shrub planting.

Funded by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Local Improvement Scheme, the funding application was approved by local councillor Ken Rigby.

Cllr Rigby said: “The new park looks fantastic and gives children so many more exciting play opportunities.

“The consultation involved children from Kimberley Primary School who gave lots of ideas about what they wanted – and I’m sure they are delighted with the finished results.”

The Local Improvement Scheme has funded the upgrading or creation of play parks across the county with 6 parks opening in the last 18 months.

The play park upgrade was carried out by Groundwork Greater Nottingham who worked closely with local schoolchildren, residents and the town and borough councils.

Jo Bradley, Executive Director of Groundwork Greater Nottingham said: “Our Landscape Design Services have done an excellent job and this project was particularly important to us as it is designed in line with the views of children and young people who will be using it.”

Year five pupil Caitlin Fox from Kimberley Primary School said: “The park is so much better now as the old equipment was damaged and rusty. The swings and the climbing frame are great fun and I love meeting my friends here.”

Also attending the opening was Coun Richard Butler, chairman of the Environment and Sustainability committee at Nottinghamshire County Council and David Nunn, vice-chairman of Kimberley Town Council.
