Pensioner conned by distraction duo

A pensioner had her bank card stolen by two cunning thieves in a supermarket car park in Eastwood.

While one of the men quizzed the woman, at Morrisons on Saturday, June 20, at around noon, his accomplice took her purse out of her handbag, stole her debit card, and then put the purse back.

As the 67-year-old left the car park, she realised her card was gone and looked over to see the thief at the cashpoint withdrawing money. She believes the conman saw her use her pin number in the store.

She later discovered that the pair had taken out 290 from her account.

The woman, from Eastwood, who did not want to be named, said: "I couldn't sleep, I was so upset.

"I felt really angry with myself because I am very security-minded. I was shocked that they had done it to me. I'm so angry."

She contacted the newspaper because she wanted to warn other people to be on their guard because the thieves tricked her so easily, despite the fact she was always careful.

She said: "A respectable looking gentleman stopped me, waving a 2 coin and asking for change for a phone.

"I got some money out and he was then asking me where there was a phone. Then he asked me where there was a hotel, so I turned around and pointed out The Sun Inn.

"He didn't seem to take much notice, and then he walked towards the trolley park and he was asking how to use that.

"He was asking me all these questions and turning me around while someone else whipped my purse out my bag."

The pensioner said that, as she drove off, she realised her card was gone and saw the man at the ATM.

She cancelled the card as soon as she got home, but a statement showed he had withdrawn 290 within minutes of taking the card.

The man who confronted the woman was described as Eastern European and in his late 30s.

Police have been informed and are urging people to be on their guard and anyone with information to contact them on 0115 9670999.
