Plan for Lawrence family cottage

Brinsley vine cottage

Brinsley vine cottage

The owner of a Brinsley cottage lived in by the family of DH Lawrence wants to restore it and bring it back to how it looked back in the late 1800s.

Brandon Kinton, whose family has owned Vine Cottage since 1899, wants to get it looking as it did back in Lawrence’s day, and have it included in the Blue Line Trail – a local tour of Lawrence hot spots.

The initial stages of the project are asking people what they think and gauging if there would be anybody interested in volunteering to help out, Mr Kinton said.

“There will be construction work, and there’s three acres of landscaping work to do as well.

“It will be about community involvement.

“I am looking around for support and trying to calculate the level of interest.

“Whether people will think it’s a good idea or not though I’m not sure, so we really want to hear from people.”

The arts and leisure portfolio holder at Broxtowe Borough Council Richard Robinson said: “It seems a really worthwhile initiative and there will be plenty of opportunities for young people with schools visits and so on.

“Brinsley is perhaps a slightly forgotten part of the borough so I would be more than happy to support this.”

If plans went ahead and Mr Kinton was successful with funding applications, the old stables and orchard would be restored and a wildflower meadow, wetland area, artificial badger set and community allotment would be created.

Vine Cottage in Brinsley, Nottinghamshire was once the home of DH Lawrence’s Aunt Polly and Uncle James.

It later became the setting for two of Lawrence’s most celebrated works, Odour of Chrysanthemums and The Widowing of Mrs Holroyd.
