A DERELICT set of shops in Langley Mill is to receive a £15,000 facelift courtesy of funding from supermarket Asda as part of a £1m revamp project.

An application by Amber Valley borough councillor Alex Stevenson to renovate the shop fronts of the former Co-op building on Cromford Road has been approved.

The £15,000 awarded by Amber Valley Borough Council is part of a £50,000 fund given to the authority to improve the appearance of shops in Langley Mill by Asda.

The cash will be used to install new rollers, windows and shutters at the eyesore buildings, once home to a furnishing company, a printers and a snooker club.

Cllr Stevenson, who also owns the building was delighted with the decision.

He said: “I’m hoping it is going to boost business in Langley Mill.

“It’s going to bring new business into the area and encourage old ones to stay here.”

The Conservative councillor for the Shipley Park, Horsley and Horsley Woodhouse ward owns the building firm Imperial GB and in December received planning permission to convert the disused building into five shops, eight starter offices, 12 one and two-bedroomed apartments and storage areas.

He estimates the scheme will cost just under £1m.

The building will be renamed St George’s Court and work is due to be completed by November this year.

Cllr Stevenson says he hopes to restore the ‘original character’ of the century-old building by the time the work is done.

Member for the Langley Mill and Aldercar Ward Terry Thorpe believes the £15,000 shop front improvement grant will be a big boost for the ‘run down’ Cromford Road area.

He said: “It is going to really smarten up that area, which has been in the doldrums for some time now.”

So far the borough council has allocated almost £25,000 of the Asda shop improvement grant money to businesses in Langley Mill.

Since being launched last year PW Shepherd Upholstery and Premier Hair on Station Road, and Alan Blake hairdressers on Cromford Road have taken advantage of the grants.

They are available as part of a planning agreement between Asda and the council, after the supermarket giant was given approval by the council to build its new store off Cromford Road in the area.
