A couple from Brinsley have reached their Platinum wedding anniversary marking 70 years of marriage.

Sam and Olive George marked the milestone with visits from the Broxtowe Mayor and friends during the day, and a meal out at Brinsley Lodge with family in the evening.

93-year-old Sam said the secret to a long-lasting marriage was sharing the same hobbies.

“We both loved cycling,” he said.

“We would bike to Derbyshire every Sunday.”

The couple, who met out on their bikes, have lived in their Hall Lane home ever since they were married.

Olive has been there since was a baby and said the house, originally a thatched cottage, had been in her family since the early 1800s and owned by her grandmother.

The couple got married at the village’s St James’s Church back in 1942.

“We had a nice day,” said olive.

“We had a reception in what used to be the church reading room and then went off to Blackpool on honeymoon.

“I remember it was windy and blowy and there was sand all over the prominade!” she said.

The couple have one daughter and two granddaughters.

Sam used to be a builder’s quantum surveyor before he was called up for service in 1940, and Olive worked in factories in Langley Mill making jumpers.

Sam was born and bred in Kimberley, moving to Brinsley when he married.
