Police warn homeowners

Homeowners and motorists are being warned by police to make sure they secure their houses and cars before leaving them.

Sgt John Troup, who is in charge of the area’s safer neighbourhood teams, has told the Advertiser that there has been an increase in thefts from cars and homes since the weather warmed up.

He said: “Over recent weeks the area has seen a rise in crimes being committed where thieves have entered insecure homes and vehicles.

“With the short spell of warm weather people understandably open windows to keep their homes cool but where possible these should be secured with a latch and should never be left open whilst you go out, even for a short time.

“Valuable items and car keys should not be left where they are in reach and in the case of leaving vehicles insecure then even a tax disc can attract an opportunist thief.

“Whilst crimes of this kind are low, we want to keep it that way and I would urge residents to help us by protecting their property and not giving thieves an easy time.”
