Pram race a roaring success

Kimberley’s pram race was a roaring success this year, with double the number of entries compared to last year.

A total of 17 teams took part in the 34th annual fundraiser and one of the organiser’s, Ian Campbell, said it was good the people of Kimberley ‘stepped up to the plate’.

“We didn’t make any secret of the fact that we needed more entries, and I think the community didn’t want to lose the event,” he said.

“It was a case of use it or lose it. I think people just stepped up to the plate.”

Committee members also advertised the event more this year, mailing out leaflets and setting up a facebook page.

Ian, who serves as a town councillor, said the town was ‘heaving’ and there were some ‘wonderful bits of comedy’ with the entries.

Teams included the ‘red barrows’ with team members dressed in flight suits, the ‘war bees’ by the staff at Warburtons in Eastwood, and women from the Larks Nest pub in Nuthall, who all dressed in blow up bird outfits.

Warburtons won the ‘best overall’ award, which Ian said was particularly nice because they had entered the competiton for several years and never won anything.

Other award winners were The Red Barrows for best pram, the Larks Nest for best fancy dress, Kimberley Swimming Club for fastest team and Kimberley Cubs for best mother and baby.

There were stalls, a craft fair, a fun fair and local bands and singers performing, including Euler and Megan Sugarman.

Another town councillor, Dot Saxton, said the event was ‘fantastic’.

“Kimberley was absolutely full and it was just a fantastic day with lovely weather,” she said.
