A teenager has shaved all his hair off to help raise money for a trip to Africa.

Joe Cheese raised £450 to put towards his trip to Tanzania, where he will help build new schools and teach kids English.

The Eastwood Comprehensive School pupil decided on shaving his hair off because he was known for looking after his appearance and it was a challenge.

His step-dad Ben said: “It’s something he takes a lot of pride in so to get rid of it was a huge step. At first he said ‘no, no’. He took some convincing!”

Joe and 14 other pupils from the comprehensive school have signed up for the trip in 2014, which Joe described as a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’.

“I want to help do something that I won’t do again,” he said.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and the perfect time to do it.”

Each pupil has got to raise £4,000 to cover all of their costs.

16-year-old Joe, of Seymour Road, has so far raised £470, but plans to do more fundraising events before he jets off.

As well as the building and teaching work, the group will be looking after the local wildlife, for example digging holes for elephants to drink from, and will get the opportunity to climb a 12,000ft mountain and visit an 18,000 acre safari.

The trip has been organised by Camps International who did an assembly at Eastwood Comprehensive to promote the trip to Africa and try and get students on board.
