Pub closure threat to farm

Volunteers who run a community farm in Cotmanhay are crossing their fingers for the next couple of months as the pub where it is based has gone up for sale.

Quackers has been in the car park of the Bridge Inn since 2010, when it was relocated from its orginal home in founder Jackie Whipp’s back garden to much bigger premises.

Now the Bridge Street pub is up for sale, owners Greene King have said that if a buyer comes forward before the farm’s lease runs out in October, the new landlords could ask the farm to pack up and leave.

Fellow founder Melanie Woolins said: “If the pub is still up for sale in October, Greene King will give us another year’s lease.

“So it’s fingers crossed until then.”

But she said it was unlikely that new landlords would ask the farm to go as it is such an ‘attraction’, which brings business to the pub.

“When we have our open days, people from outside the area come down and a lot of them will go to the pub afterwards,” she explained.

Quackers takes on volunteers, reffered by Ilkeston Job Center and has also given work experience to students from Kirk Hallam Community, Technology and Sports College and Ormiston Enterprise Academy in Cotmanhay.

It will be having an open day on August Bank Holiday when visitors can see its newly hatched ducklings.
