Kay Sunnyday

THE funeral of a well known landlady took place last week.

Kay Sunnyday who ran the Durham Ox in Brinsley and the Royal Oak in Watnall for 25 years, died on January 2.

Her funeral took place at St Mary’s Church in Greasley last Friday, January 20.

Kay and her husband Dick took on the Durham Ox for 12 years in 1964, and went on to run the Royal Oak in Watnall for a further 12 years.

Despite being retired from the pub trade for several years, Kay’s son Lance, said he was always surprised at how well everybody remembered her.

“The thing that always fascinated me was whenever we popped up to see them and went out and about locally, was there were always lots of people who knew them,” he said.

“And lots of people who came to the funeral knew her from her days as a landlady and had fond memories of her.”

Lance said his mum was an ‘excellent cook’, a ‘legend at darts’ and was always very mentally active in her late years.

“She learnt how to use a computer in her 80s.

“We were absolutely blown away,” he said.

Kay met her husband Dick in Arundel before they moved up to Nottinghamshire where they lived in Nuthall and Eastwood all their married life.
