Record results show progress at Eastwood school
A PRIMARY school in Eastwood achieved record-high SATS test results just months after a bad Ofsted report.
Brookhill Leys Primary was put in the 'need to improve' category by Ofsted inspectors last autumn but is now celebrating after picking up the excellent results in this year's SATS tests.
In the exams, 96 per cent of pupils achieved the expected grade in English and 84 per cent of pupils achieved the expected grade in maths - with 30 per cent of those pupils achieving the highest grade level five.
Headteacher Jacqui Sainsbury put the results down to improved teaching and extra tutoring for the children ahead of the exams.
She said: "We had hoped we were going to get these results because we've worked really hard.
"We've done so much I wouldn't say we were surprised because teachers have worked their socks off. We are really really pleased and we still intend to work on it.
"We've had lots of training for teachers and children's behaviour has improved. We've made a big leap forward in the last year."
Ms Sainsbury, who started at the school last year just weeks before the Ofsted report, put a ten week booster programme into place where children could have extra lessons to prepare for the tests and organised a breakfast club and after school tutoring.
Last year Brookhill Leys SATS tests results were 64 per cent in English and 79 per cent in maths.
The school in Chewton Street received the bad Ofsted report after it was discovered important paperwork was not carried out.
Ms Sainsbury was also told to improve the quality of teaching and learning in every class so it was consistent.
Office manager Liz Eyre said: "The new headteacher has really raised expectations in school with a huge focus on the children's enjoyment and the quality of teaching and learning."
After a school is put in the need to improve category, Ofsted inspectors return a year later, and if things have not got any better the school is put in special measures.
Ms Sainsbury said: "Hopefully now when they come back in the autumn we will get a better outcome. We're feeling confident."
