Residents' plea for better parks
WORRIED parents are campaigning for funding to improve run-down parks in their area after claims youngsters are choosing to play in the streets and putting themselves in danger.
Vince Pykett (47), of Brierley Road, Unstone Green, joined a group of residents at an Unstone Parish Council meeting in an appeal to the authority to help fund repairs to four parks in the surrounding area.
Mr Pykett said: "The parks are in a pathetic and inadequate state and kids are playing on the main green at Unstone where there is a busy main road and this could cause an accident if a ball goes into oncoming traffic so something needs doing."
Parents raised concerns about a lack of play equipment at the parks on Brierley Road and Whittington Lane, at Unstone Green, St John's Road, Unstone, and near Sharman Close, Apperknowle.
The council, which welcomed residents' concerns, has begun investigating possible funding and confirmed cllr Janet Hill is forming the independent working party Unstone and District Park Play Area Committee to consider possible improvement plans.
Cllr Hill said: "The play equipment at these parks does need up-dating and the last time the council received funding to do work for the parks was in about 2003."
The working party was due to meet from 6.30pm, on Wednesday, August 25, at Birch Hall Golf Club, Unstone.
Council clerk Jayne Simpson said: "We have begun looking at possible funding sources." NE Derbyshire District Council said the parish council owns or leases the parks and is responsible for improvements and the district council has supported play areas but was unable to help this project.
