Two sisters whose mum has survived breast cancer are organising a fun day in Jacksdale to raise cash for cancer charities.

Last September Samantha Ryan was diagnosed with breast cancer and has undergone numerous hours of surgery and countless sessions of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Just last week her family received the great news she had been discharged so daughters Gemma and Kirsty decided to organise the fun day as a celebration.

Daughter Gemma, 19, of Rutland Road, Westwood, said: “Our mum is a strong woman, who takes most things in her stride but news that she had contracted this disease was devastating for her and of course all the family.

“Last week we had the wonderful news that my mum had been discharged and hopefully this is the first step to beating this terrible illness.

“These days, so many lives are affected by cancer, the research funds for finding a cure and better treatments will always need more resources.”

Andrea Day, of Cancer Research UK, said: “Kate and Gemma are valued Cancer Research UK supporters. Thanks to the support of people like Gemma and Kirsty, remarkable advances have been made in the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer in recent years and many lives have been saved as a result.”

The fun day will be held at Jacksdale Miners’ Welfare on Sunday, August 26, from 3pm onwards, with proceeds going to Cancer Research UK.

Gemma added: “Our family have lived in Jacksdale for the entirety of our lives and we know what a wonderful close knit community it can be and so we are confident that our fundraising can make a difference.

“If this results in more happy endings like ours, then it will all be worthwhile.”

They are asking people to go along on the day or to donate a small raffle prize they will collect. To get in touch email gemma.ryan12@gmail.com.
