Harriet Birtwhistle won the competition to design a road dafety banner.

A six-year-old schoolgirl from Nuthall beat off stiff competition from 1,000 other kids to win a road safety competition.

Harriet Birtwhistle, a pupil at Mornington Primary School, beat hundreds of other pupils from across Nottinghamshire to design a banner targeted at speeding drivers.

Harriet’s design depicted a tortoise and a snail either side of a message saying ‘please drive slowly.’.

Des Rennell, one of the judges who visited the school to present Harriet with her banner and gold medal, said: “Her design was simple, yet very appropriate and that’s what we liked about it.

“The results are always fantastic and Harriet’s banner serves as the perfect reminder to drivers to slow down.”

Mr Rennell also presented the school’s headteacher, Linda Azemia, with 300 high visibility drawstring bags, one for each pupil.

Ms Azemia said: “I’m very proud of Harriet. The competition coincided with Road Safety Week and was a fun way of engaging the children about the subject. They responded really well producing a wide range of contrasting designs, focussing on the importance of staying safe near roads.”

The competition was run by Recognition Express Nottingham West, a school uniform supplier, in conjunction with the road safety charity, BRAKE.

This is the fourth year the company has run the competition for primary school pupils aged three to 13.

Mr Rennell said: “This competition is one of the highlights of my company’s year and we really look forward to receiving the entries each year.”

BRAKE’s aim is to prevent road crashes through education and awareness programmes.

Pupils designs were expected to send out a powerful message to motorists and road users.

Ten children under the age of 19 are either killed or seriously injured every day across the UK.
