Smokers quit to tie the knot

LOVE is in the air for a romantic couple who quit a 70 cigs-a-day smoking habit to save for a dream wedding.

Maggie Loftus (49) and Malcolm Page (55), of Alexandra Road West, Chesterfield, kicked the habit which cost about 5,000 a year so they could afford to get married and look forward to a healthier future.

Mum-of-four Maggie said: "I'm so excited and if we start smoking again there won't be a wedding because we can't afford it."

The couple say they put their success down to their love and support from Derbyshire Primary Care Trust's stop-smoking service.

Health care assistant Malcolm had been warned his blood pressure was high and if he did not stop smoking it could kill him so the couple decided to quit together and use the saved cash to pay for a family venue for their big day.

PCT advisor Mark Todd said; "It's fantastic to see people who have been so addicted for so long find the motivation to change and their future is an excellent reason to keep up the good work." The couple who had been smokers over 30 years have saved 1,600 since quitting in November and are getting married at The Sandpiper Hotel, Chesterfield, in April.

Yesterday was national No Smoking Day anyone wanting to give up in the Derbyshire area should call 0800 085 2299.
