Spate of break-ins in towns

Burglars have been breaking into properties in Newthorpe and Giltbrook in the run up to Christmas.

Police say there has been a spate of break-ins in the area and a total of 12 houses, garages and sheds have been targeted over the last few weeks.

A number of items have been taken including tools, cash and jewellery and at two properties, keys were taken from the house and the cars stolen from the driveway.

Burglars stole tools from a garage in Main Street, Newthorpe, and cash and jewellery from a house in Hazlewood Close, Newthorpe.

Other streets targeted in Newthorpe include Fairdale Drive, Whitby Road, Rolleston Drive, Telford Drive and Serlby Road. Thieves also got into the village’s sports hall and stole two shipping containers.

A car was taken from a driveway in Grantham Close, Giltbrook after intruders got through an unlocked back door and took the keys, and burglars got through a conservatory door in Turner Drive, Giltbrook.

A shed was broken into in Station Road, Awsworth, and a garage was broken into in Nethergreen, Eastwood.

Police officers in the area are warning residents to be ‘extra vigilant’ around Christmas time.

One officer said: “We often spend our hard earned money on buying presents for friends and family. Sadly, thieves know this too – and they’re on the lookout for opportunities. Take steps to protect your home and vehicle this festive season.”
