Trio jailed after caught on camera
Three relatives were caught burgling a pensioner after police rigged cameras up in his house.
The three Mercers were sent to prison last week for burgling George Longden from Langley Mill, after police caught evidence on camera.
Derby Corwn Court heard how 81-year-old George, who lives with his 73-year-old carer Enid Gent, had not had a full night sleep since the burglary and his breathing problems had got worse.
”I hope they are found and made to suffer like I have,” he said.
The intruders broke into the house in Horsley Crescent on June 6 and stole Ms Gent’s purse and Mr Longden’s wallet, containing £140, bus passes, bank and credit cards.
Miss Vee Munro, prosecuting, said the raid was discovered at 4am when Mrs Gent went downstairs to get water for Mr Longden.
A white Rover car belonging to one of the offenders was seen in Langley Mill and then at a Nottingham cashpoint where one of them tried, but failed, to withdraw money using one of Mrs Gent’s cards.
Recorder Stephen Thomas told the trio: “This was the home of two elderly and vulnerable individuals.”
Officers rigged the property after an earlier raid at the address where a ‘substantial amount of cash’ had been stolen.
Custody for two years five months was ordered for Craig Mercer, 20, of Woodfield Road, Nottingham and Shad Mercer, 21, of Conifer Crescent, Clifton.
The court heard they had two previous convictions for burglary. Paul Mercer, 50, of Glenloch Drive, Clifton was ordered to serve 20 months.
All three pleaded guilty.
