Wagon set to return after restoration

The restored wagon will be back on the Chalons Way roundabout this weekend after a £15,400 restoration project.

The wagon will be winched back into place on the traffic island at around 6amon Sunday morning.

The Council asked Derbyshire-based specialists Rampart Carriage and Wagon Services to carry out the large-scale work, which has seen the majority of the wagon’s body planking and both headstocks replaced and new supporting plates and brackets fitted.

In addition, new timber, paintwork and sealant preservation work – along with the provision of water ‘run-offs’ – will mean the wagon is now better protected against bad weather.

Cllr Mike Wallis, lead member for culture and leisure, said: “It is right that this piece of local history is protected for future generations and I am sure all those with an interest in this borough’s industrial heritage will be delighted to see the Stanton Wagon restored to its former glory .

“We were committed to a high quality restoration of this landmark wagon and I am confident local people will be very pleased with the results and to see that it is has been properly preserved as a monument to the many local people and families from across Erewash that worked at Stanton Ironworks.”
