Walkling in a winter wonderland

The Eastwood and Kimberley area was transformed into a winter wonderland as heavy snowfall covered the town in a blanket of white.

The wintry weather caused havoc as commuters battled to work and drifts of up to six inches fell across the towns.

Public transport was brought to its knees, parents were left to find alternative childcare and schools across the area closed after the heavy flurries.

For many the white stuff was a chance to indulge in a spot of light-hearted fun, with hundreds scrambling to parks to sledge and build snowmen.

One Langley Mill couple even went a step further — building an entire igloo in their front garden with the help of friends.

Rebecca Wilkinson, 21, said her and partner Matt, 24, both of Pine Close, got the idea while walking in Shipley Park together.

She said: “Matt started making it on Saturday and didn’t finish until midnight on Sunday.

“We didn’t have enough snow and we had to wait for more. We used old recycling boxes - they turned out to be the perfect mould for bricks. The neighbours got quite involved!”

While it is expected to remain cold for the rest of the week, the snow is expected to clear over the weekend, with rain forecast for Sunday and temperatures getting a bit warmer.

Elsewhere the freezing conditions saw the East Midlands Ambulance Service deal with 900 more calls than during the same period last year.

Supermarkets experienced a rush for the shelves as panic buying set in on Thursday last week.

We asked Advertiser readers to submit their pictures of the snowy conditions and had a great response.

You can see a round-up of the intrepid snappers’ efforts below, including those taken by Dave Clarke who lives in Newthorpe.
