Warning after heavy rainfall
The fire service have issued warnings to drivers after being called out to road accidents following heavy rainfall.
Ilkeston station manager, Gary Platts, said: “On Monday Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service attended many road traffic collisions involving excess water on the roads or flooding in homes.
“Often this was attributable to poor driving and not understanding the difficulties that excessive water poses on our roads.
“My advice is drive to the road conditions, slow down.
“Puddles may be deeper than they appear and flooding even a few inches can cause serious problems in a vehicle.
“If there is fast flowing water outside, don’t enter the water in a vehicle or on foot.
“Insurance companies may not pay up on claims to your vehicle if they feel you placed yourself or your car in harm’s way.”
DFRS have also asked residents to think carefully before calling 999 with more heavy rain predicted.
Gary added: “Rescues and emergencies involving floods are definitely the responsibility of Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service, however – is a few inches of water in a cellar an emergency?
“Think before you call 999.”
