Wife’s letter to number 10

An Ilkeston woman has written to the Prime Minister urging him to stop the closure of the Manners Ward.

Margaret Severn put pen to paper after her husband spent two weeks at Ilkeston Community Hospital.

Mr Severn was transferred to Ilkeston after six weeks at the Royal Derby Hospital.

In the letter, Mrs Severn, from West Hallam writes: “When my husband left Derby he had lost two stone in weight, had no appetite and refused to eat.

“With a little gentle persuasion and a lot of loving care from the nurses on Manners Ward, after two weeks he was well enough to come home.”

Speaking to the Advertiser about the letter which she posted to 10 Downing Street last week, Mrs Severn, said: “I just feel so strongly that everything that can be done should be done to stop the ward from closing.

“The staff at the hospital were wonderful.

“They were brilliant with my husband but also with me as well.

“The care he received was second to none and everyone you speak to about the hospital says the same.

“They are local people caring for local people and that really does make a difference.”
